Do The People Really Have The Power In The United States

Whether you are a republican who thinks Obama was the worst president ever, a democrat who thinks Trump is the worst president ever, or an independent who thinks whatever it is you think, many people fear that the president has too much power.  Let’s not stop at the president.  The government has too much power.  For the most part, I agree.  Here are some reasons why.

  1. Property Taxes – you can buy a house, pay it off, and the government still has the power to take it away from you.  You paid for the house.  It is yours!  The government does not own it, and they should have no right to it.
  2. Extortion – The government requires you to buy products from them, without a choice, or you will be penalized.  I live in Virginia Beach, and I am required to pay the government for water, sewage, and for some strange reason, trash pickup.  Now, if I don’t want these services, it sucks to be me.  I need to pay them, and they can change the price whenever they want, and to whatever they want.  Guess what, all of those prices keep increasing.  The garbage pickup price has doubled in the 6 years I have lived here.  I can’t go to a competing garbage company, because the government is in charge of the garbage.  I can’t even cancel and bring the garbage to the dump myself.  I am forced to buy their service because I live in Virginia Beach.
  3. Healthcare – Thank God Trump is getting rid of the individual mandate that Obama put into place, but that still doesn’t fix all of the problems.  Sure, Obama’s insane violation of rights is going away, but we are still at the mercy of the government’s rules.  One rule in particular is hugely responsible for pharmaceutical prices being what they are.  The US government does not allow us to by prescription drugs from outside of the United States.  I think it is safe to say that the drug companies have a lot to do with that decision.  The government has no right to limit us like that.  In doing so, they have put us at the mercy of the drug companies in the US, and as we all know, they are ripping us off.

OK, those were all examples of how we are getting screwed.  However, a video that I saw recently, which was a horrible piece of reporting, reminded my how much power we do have.  The video was about Trump rolling back EPA regulations of cars and light trucks, requiring manufacturers to meet certain mileage standards in the near future.  The video said that if the regulations are removed, Americans will each spend several hundred dollars more per year on gas because cars won’t get as good of mileage.  Says who?  This is where the people have the power.  People have the right to buy whatever car they want.  If they want better gas mileage, then they will buy a car that gets good gas mileage.  If everyone starts buying cars with good gas mileage, what will car manufacturers do?  They will start making cars that get better mileage in order to compete with each other.  That is how the market works (when the government is not in the way).  This same principle goes for pretty much any product, except for the ones that the government controls, you know, because they can do whatever they want.  Are Iphone’s too expensive?  Stop buying them.  If enough people do that, prices will drop.  Cell phone company charging too much?  Switch!  Groceries getting too expensive?  Find another grocery store.

When enough people ban together, things change.  This is the biggest fear that our government has.  Lucky for them, they have both parties scared to vote 3rd party for fear the the other party may gain control.  While I believe that we have a long ways to go before we become free from the 2 party system (GO LIBERTARIANS!), we the people do have the power to make change.  Here are a few things that I personally would love to see changed, and firmly believe that if people banned together, they could happen.

  1. Term limits on Congress
  2. American’s can purchase pharmaceuticals from outside of the US
  3. Reciprocity for conceal carry permits.  I shouldn’t go from being a law abiding citizen to a felon when I cross a state line, just like the second amendment should not disappear when I cross a state line.
  4. Right to try – this is something Trump has been working on, but the democrats have been stopping.  A terminally ill patient should be able to try any experimental drug that they believe may help them, even though the FDA has not approved it.  They are already dying!  Who is the government to withhold potential life saving care?
  5. Equal laws for all – I am sick of politicians getting away with crimes that anyone else would be in jail for (cough Hillary cough).  If it is illegal for you and me, it is illegal for them.

I’m sure I could come up with more, but you get the point.  I’d love to know what you think should/could be changed, so feel free to share, like, comment.  Have an awesome day!

Joe Malone

OK, you are probably wondering who this Joe Malone guy is and why you should care what he thinks. Well, I'm a husband, father, teacher, entrepreneur, and mildly entertaining guy who is simply sick of watching this country go down the drain.
