If you hear someone say that they are pro choice, you more than likely know what they are talking about. Abortion. They are saying that it is a woman’s body, and she has the right to choose what she is going to do with it. The counter arguments are obvious, considering the baby is a life, but that is not what this article is about. What I want to know is if you can be pro choice while saying that you are against prostitution. I would like to point out that I am in no way saying that I am pro prostitution, and this article is in no way a suggestion that it should be made legal. It is simply a comparison.
Before we get started, I would like to point out that the federal government has not outlawed prostitution. Each state has the power to decide if a woman choosing what to do with her body (see what I did there) is legal or not. With the exception of a few counties in Nevada, prostitution is illegal everywhere in the United States. How can that be, when abortion is legal? You may be thinking to yourself, “These are two completely unrelated matters.” I strongly disagree.
Are You Really Pro Choice?
If you are pro choice, your argument is simple. A woman has the right to do what she wants with her body, even if it kills the baby inside of her. If you really believe that a woman has the right to do what she wants with her body, then you must be pro prostitution. After all, it is her body, right? If she wants to have sex as a way to make a living, who are you to tell her that she can’t do that? It isn’t your body, it is hers, right? I have made this point to several people, and they have all had similar responses.
Them: “But they aren’t the same. It isn’t right to have sex for money.”
Me: “But you just said a woman has the right to do what she wants with her body.”
Them: “But prostitution is illegal!”
Me: “So if we outlawed abortion, that would mean you were against it?”
Them: “No, the law would be wrong because it is the woman’s body. The government can’t tell a woman what to do or not do with her body.”
Me: “So you are pro prostitution.”
Them: “Prostitution is wrong, period!”
Me: “So you are not pro choice, you are pro choices that agree with you.”
Them: ………walking away.
My argument is not a complicated one. If you are pro choice, you are saying that a woman has the right to do what she wants with her body. That means that if she can kill a baby, she can have sex for money. Now, I imagine that some people are saying, “But it’s not a baby.” While I disagree with you, that is irrelevant to the argument. You are saying that a woman has the right to choose one thing (abortion), but not the other thing (prostitution). That means that you are NOT pro choice, you are simple pro choices that agree with you.
